Senbazuru is an ongoing distributed installation reimagining the Japanese practice of folding 1,000 cranes as a contemporary public sculptural practice. fortune cookie fortunes, washi paper and other cultural print patterns, family photos, wishes in Chinese and English. The cranes are housed in decorative containers and placed as beacons across San Francisco: the public library, the SF Zen Center, public gathering spaces, while a living map tracks their locations across the city. The work is rooted in ritual and repetition as inquiry: what does it mean to make the same form a thousand times, each one distinct? The process is the answer: slow, meditative, cumulative, and never finished. Almost anyone can fold a crane, and any assistance is gladly provided. That openness is the invitation and the point.
